mike tyler training center

The Great Salt Lake Council Varsity Team is sponsoring the building of a new Training Center. This will be located in Rendezvous Meadows at the East Fork of the Bear Boy Scout Reservation. We need your help. Most of the resources for this project will come from volunteers. This is a special project named for a special person. If you would like to participate in this project in any way please contact the Council Varsity team at rehall@bsamail.org

Why are we building

Many are familiar with the trailer located in Rendezvous Meadows at East Fork. Weather and time are taking their toll. What started as a field kitchen for an drilling company served for sometime as the kitchen at Camp Bear Lake. For ten years now it has been the center of such great activities as Varsity Scout Junior Leader Training, Varsity Scout Big Event, and other council and camp Events. Regrettably it is showing its age.

Over the last ten years the use of the west-end of East Fork known as Rendezvous Meadows has grown appreciably. While the trailer has been a great resource it is limited in its usefulness. Because of its design and size there is not much more that can be done to facilitate growth. We need a facility in or near the "Meadows" to better accommodate our needs. Our hope is the new Mike Tyler training center will satisfy much of this need.

Why the Name

Mike Tyler had a great love for youth. He also shared a powerful vision of Varsity Scouting. Serving as course director for Junior Leader training for several years he was successful in applying ideals and practices to improve the quality of training. While scouts were his focus he also make considerable contributions serving on many Wood Badge staffs and as a Varsity Wood Badge course director. He was instrumental in improving Varsity Scout training. Much of what is good in Varsity Scouting today stems from his work and contributions.

He also served in many other ways. His service included work as Scoutmaster as well as Varsity Coach and in many other assignments in all four families of scouting. At the time of his death he was serving as a chartered organization representative. Mike was an individual who enjoyed the opportunities he had to be involved in the teaching of our youth. Several years ago we lost Mike. While returning from what had become an annual event for Mike and some his friends, the climbing of Mt. Whitney, he died in a car accident. Those who knew him miss him.

Now we have an opportunity to carry on in the spirit of the work Mike so dearly love. Those of us who knew him are pleased that this project can go forward. It is wonderful that Mike's name can be associated with such a worthy project.
